Quick Impressions
Journal with Witch is the type of anime that gets critical acclaim, but I’m not sure it’s one that hits the mainstream. Likewise, its opening theme, “Sonare”, sung beautifully by TOMOO, is less an attention-grabber than it is a wistful, nostalgic jaunt. I count myself among those who prefer that sort of thing.
“Sonare’s” introduction, with its gentle tones, evoke a pleasant journey through both time and space. TOMOO’s soft vocals during the verse moves in a slow, deliberate manner. It’s as if the singer is reminiscing as she digs through her memories. From verse to chorus, there isn’t much in the way of ornamentation, but it sounds hopeful. That mixture of hope and nostalgia builds up nicely, with an added minute dose of catharsis, all the way to the chorus.
Once you get to the chorus, TOMOO’s outpouring fills me with warmth, leaving me energized, ready to face the future. While other anime openers might rouse listeners with their energy, I prefer immersing myself in “Sonare’s” quiet, gentle euphoria.
