Quick Impressions
In “Test Me”, the message Chanmina expresses is very much in line with Oshi no Ko‘s previous musical forays. In Yoasobi’s “Idol”, we got a song about how idols don a commercially perfect persona that masks the very essence of their humanity, flaws and all. The result is a devastating emotional crumbling. So goes with “Test Me”, a song that similarly delves into the soul-crushing nature of the entertainment industry. Again, the themes of needing to compromise one’s own authenticity to build a perfect, yet brittle facade rears its head. And as the song progresses, it’s only a matter of time until the need to maintain this perfection chips away at their very being until they too disintegrate.
Chanmina’s vocals for Oshi no Ko‘s opening “Test Me” have been nothing short of mesmerizing. From the opening notes, the instrumental rock introduction gives the song a sinister vibe. That segues perfectly into her delivery, which has an edge to it with its dark, seductively drawn-out tones. By maximizing the resulting tension at every turn, Chanmina adroitly draws me into the song’s warped reality leading into the chorus.
The chorus here feels like a release, but not in a good way. This is where the singer, crushed by the expectations and the attention, lashes out. Chanmina’s vocal edge continues, firing off a salvo of anger mixed with pain and desperation. All of it is directed at the entertainment complex, from management to the media, and to the fanbase who consume it without any regard for the performer’s humanity. The wail of despair at the end becomes the haunting reminder of what it takes to succeed in the shark-infested waters of celebrity culture.
