Quick Impressions
The soundtrack to I Want to Love You Till Your Dying Day features a partnership between MICHIRU and Yukari Hashimoto. If you’re looking for music that’s exceptional, these aren’t the composers I’d look to. But if nothing else, their works have been competent, and that’s what we get from their compositions for the I Want to Love You Till Your Dying Day anime.
Given I Want to Love You Till Your Dying Day‘s yuri storyline, the music is consistent with other works in that genre. Which is to say, if you love the kind of gushy, pleasant woodwinds and string melodies, this soundtrack has plenty of it. Tracks like “Futarino Kodo” and “Isshoni Iraretara” are where Yukari Hashimoto gets to display her compositional chops. Yes, it’s the kind of stuff I’d readily eat up since I enjoy that upbeat, pleasant fare. But no, don’t expect it to be the kind of sound that’ll ingrain itself in your memory or anything like that. It’s honestly pleasantly nondescript.
But given that this is a yuri story set in wartime, yes, this soundtrack has some of the tension-filled themes full of discordance. “Haritsumeta Senjo” is the canonical grim, foreboding type of track. It has the atmosphere of imminent war, but it’s also nothing you haven’t heard before. “Sento Kaishi” is also your by-the-numbers grim track with electronica to create tension. But it’s also not all that memorable, without a motif or theme that’d get me to take notice. So though the action is an important part of this anime series, setting it to music is not where MICHIRU’s strengths lie. She’s far better on more emotionally charged music like “Shizukana Ketsui” where the despondency comes out decently.
